In 1985 some 3,000 miles west of Lexington, Virginia, the first Roots and Shoots Garden became established at the Elizabeth Gamble Garden Center in Palo Alto, California. Students from the nearby Walter Hays Elementary School came each week for their garden class, and now 14 years later, they are still enjoying this outdoor classroom.
In 1995 the Blue Ridge Garden Club in Lexington, Virginia asked to sponsor a similar garden program, and the faculty at Waddell Elementary School asked to have it established on their school grounds. In its first two years, the garden was just for the 2nd grade classes, but in the spring of 1997 the garden was enlarged as an all school garden when it received the prestigious Commonwealth Award from the Garden Club of Virginia.
Roots and Shoots Gardens are now growing in other places such as schools in Williamsburgh, Effinger, and Ashland, Virgiania.
